this past weekend we spent a fun day at buckskin joe, just west of canon city. it's an old western town full of fun and old-time entertainment, and the kids really had fun. we watched 'real-life' shootouts, a great magic show, and rode on a horse-drawn carriage.

afterwards we headed out on the royal gorge railroad and went to point alta vista, which is VERY high above the gorge and gives you a great view of the highest suspension bridge in the world. it was built in 1920 and is really something to see. actually, the day before, while pesche was off in the water, the kids and i went to the bridge and walked across it. it's wooden planks, and some of them had 2" gaps between them. i just told the kids to look straight ahead and keep walking...

i love summer memories.

last weekend pesche and a group of buddies from work took to the high country for a whitewater rafting trip down the arkansas river. the water was cold but beautiful, the waves weren't too awfully huge, and everyone had such a great time that they're going again next weekend, this time with lisa in tow!

instead of level 3-4 like they ran on this trip, the next one will be level 4-5. i hope i don't fall out of the raft...

about 3 weeks ago we took a weekend and went to the renaissance festival in larkspur, colorado. they've built a huge renaissance town that you can wander through. artisans, actors, and all kinds of people surround you and it's quite the experience! we saw everything from belly dancers to a jack sparrow look-a-like to a real wedding party dressed to the nines. the kids were fascinated with all the fun characters and loved watching the jousting match in the big arena.

although i can't imagine immersing myself in that world enough to actually dress up for it, i would recommend it if you're ever in colorado during the summer. it runs from mid-june until early august.

being winners

i am absolutely addicted to the olympics, and hence am suffering from a huge sleep deficit. this late-night coverage is killing me. but did you SEE our male gymnasts surprise everyone last night with a bronze?!? and to watch the emotion on the chinese team's faces when they won the gold... needless to say, tears were shed in the blaser household.

our swimmers are awesome, our lady beach volleyballers rock, our female fencers swept the medals... but it's not just about the u.s.a. for me. i love it when tiny countries are represented by strong and courageous athletes who give all they have to beat the clear favorites. even little old switzerland has won a medal, and that's saying something for a country that would fit inside california 10 times...

i think i really need to consider a tivo.
